Multiple Teams · 48th Annual St. Johns Maverick Relay Recap

MAVERICKS KICK OFF SPRING BREAK AT ST. JOHN’S RELAYS

The Maverick track and field team was back in action week-2 at the St. John’s Relays with another bag of across the board PRs in both distances and sprints!  The runners are toeing up to the start line fearless of the high caliber competition and ready to show TSCAAL who Southwest is!

Junior Jessica Gonzalez kicked things off once again in the 800m by smashing her previous PR by 12 seconds, clocking in a 3:30.  A few hours later, she did the same thing in the 1600m run, dropping her time by an unheard of 27 seconds with a 7:44!  Jessica has her sights set on running a sub-7 minute mile by the time she graduates, and with progress like that, she is well on her way of crushing that goal.

The distance boys followed Ms. Gonzalez in a speedy 800m field with sophomore Javier leading the trio with 2:27.  This was Javier’s first 800m run, and he did not disappoint.  Right behind him was the duo of Ever Rodriguez and freshman Evel Garcia battling to the finish with a 2:41 and 2:42 respectively.

The sprint crew had a stellar evening of PRs, with sophomore Phoenix Ingram not only PRing with a sub-13 second 100m (12.84), but also winning his heat against athletes from Episcopal, Westbury Christian, St. Johns and SPX!  Him, Palemon Soto, and Marvin Prudencio took that hype to the 200m and had triple PRs across the boards with 26.64, 28.23, and 29.21 respectively.

Next up we had the middle school duo of Diego Lopez and Desmond Gaines in the 400m dash.  Diego, an 8th grader competing with high school juniors and seniors, powered through the grueling 1-lap dead sprint and clocking in a very impressive 59.11 for 4th in his heat.  As a 14-yr old with no prior track experience, that is an incredible feat to accomplish!  Desmond was next in a stacked field of Lutheran South boys, clocking in a 1:09.  Although he was just shy of a PR, he used that as fuel for an awesome leg in the 4×4 at the end of the night.

Back to distances, we had the triple trouble young freshman boys of the mile run.  To put this VERY fast mile into perspective, they boys were up against senior Pedro Nasta of John Cooper, who not only broke the meet record with a 4:18 mile, but has also committed to run D1 track and field next year for the University Of Texas, Austin.  The boys of Southwest were not intimidated at all, and lead by Daniel Moreno with a PR of 5:49.  Close behind him was another photo-finish for freshman Jonathan Torres and Francisco Abundiz, both clocking in with a PR of 6:11.  The 2 young freshman are on track to be in the sub-6minute ranks with Daniel very soon.

To conclude the night is the always exciting 4×4 relay composed of Javier, Phoenix, Desmond and Diego.  The boys ran their hearts (and legs) out with a 4-second PR of 4:13 against champion squads Houston Wheatley and Episcopal.

The Mavericks will be back in action after spring break on Saturday, March 28th at the Houston Christian High School Relays, so come out and cheer loud for the Maverick track and field athletes…the louder you yell, the faster they go!

See you at the races!
