Multiple Teams · Mavs On A Playoff Hunt

SW vs. Gulfton

The Mavs played YES Prep Gulfton on Thursday with an opportunity to gain sole possession of 2nd place in the division, with the top two teams in the division moving on to the playoffs.  The Mavs took an early lead off a Carlos Cabrera (10th grade) goal and held onto a 1-0 lead at the half.  Early in the second half, Gulfton netted an equalizer with a shot from 30 yards out.  The Mavs controlled possession for nearly 70% of the game but were unable to convert a go-ahead goal despite many shots on goal down the stretch.  The game went to penalty kicks and unfortunately, the Mavs lost 5-4 in penalty kicks.  This left the Mavs in 3rd place in the division, outside of the top two positions needed to make the playoffs.

SW vs. Brays Oaks

After a tough loss to Guflton on Thursday, the Mavs took to the field the next day for a must-win game against Brays Oak.  The Mavs controlled possession for the majority of the game and did a better job converting on their scoring opportunities.  Sophomores Kevin Vasquez, Abdel Orozco, and Brandon Alvarado and freshman Jesus Portales all scored a goal each.  The defense comprised of Leondel de La Torre (10th) , Fredy Tajiboy (10th) , Juan Carlos Sierra (11th) and Gerardo Cabrera (12th) and goalie David Bahena (10th) posted their first shutout of the season, as the Mavericks defeated Brays Oaks 4-0.  The Mavericks have two games left in the season, both of which they need to win to stay in the playoff hunt.
