Mavericks News · SW Athletes Get Huge YES Prep Recognition

SW Athletes are recognized during the YES Prep Senior Spotlight Seris.

The  Senior Spotlight Series follows YES Prep seniors as they set goals for their futures, apply to colleges, and make one of the biggest decisions of their lives. In this installment, you’ll meet seniors from one of our ten campuses with graduating classes. Below, you’ll meet seniors from our Southwest campus!

Meet Delia Benitez

Delia Benitez is a member of yearbook, senior spirit committee, and the varsity volleyball team. Her dream schools are University of Texas-Austin and Trinity. She likes UT because she had a great experience at Code Longhorn, a summer program and because she likes living in urban areas. Her second choice is Trinity because she likes the idea of having more one-on-one time with professors. She intends to major in biology and wants to work in the medical field. She also hopes to study abroad.

“I like that UT offers a great education. It’s a challenge to get in, so I’d be proud to go there.”

Meet Axel Palapa

Axel Palapa is a member of student council, the track & field team, SWAG, and is a campus ambassador. His goal is to be accepted by a university that meets 100% of financial need. He dreams of owning his own tech business and hopes to study engineering and business administration. Columbia is his top choice for college because it’s in a city where he’ll have many opportunities after graduation. He is also interested in Claremont McKenna because it is academically challenging and they offer a 3-2 bachelor’s/master’s program.

“Science has always been the subject that clicks. It’s fun to figure out how things work, and, with engineering, you have to know how to break down and rebuild things.”

Meet Destinie York

Destinie York is the head senior ambassador, cheerleading captain, and a member of student council. Her goal for senior year is to feel accomplished and know that she worked her hardest throughout high school. She wants to attend Texas Christian because she would like to focus on her faith and because the university has a high job placement rate. Destine wants to major in accounting or marketing and hopes to minor in Women’s and Gender studies. She’d also like to be an ambassador or tour guide at her university, join a sorority such as AKA and Delta, and study abroad.
