Boys Middle School Basketball, Boys Varsity Basketball · Freshman Sensation, Ealy leads Mavericks past White Oak

When Travis Ealy joined the varsity team as 8th grader last year, many worry about how he would adjust to players being faster and stronger. How would he find his game with seniors that has been leading the team the past two years? He had trouble fitting in but soon adjusted to being a big part of the team. However, his season was cut short due to a broken ankle. I would never forget that day. He refused to come out of the game. It reminds you of the quote from Any Given Sunday, “never underestimate a heart of a champion.” He displayed that during the offseason by committing to a rigorous workout routine to come back this season stronger.

White Oak only had five players and jump out to a quick start. They were patient on offense and control the pace of the game. Our goal was to speed up the game to attack them in transition. We missed several easy buckets early and took unnecessary 3s that caused our offense to become stagnant. Don Smith and Julius Wilson provided a spark on both ends of the floor to get us back on track. I excited about our improvement for our 2nd game of the season.

On this team, we must fight for every rebound, steal, and every inch of opportunity. On this team, we must fight amongst ourselves, and everyone around us to pieces for that opportunity. This may sound troubling, but it is the only way we can get better by challenging our teammates as we challenge our opponents. Cause we know when you add up all of those opportunities; that is going to make the difference between WINNING and LOSING between GETTING BETTER  and BECOMING WHAT IF.

Travis Ealy lead the team with 20 points 7 rebounds 5 assist 4 blocks 3 steals

Boys Middle School Basketball, Boys Varsity Basketball · A Picture Says a 1,000 Words

A Picture Says a 1,000 Words

When we look up the word “practice”, it is defined as a repeated exercise in or performance of activity or skill to acquire or maintain proficiency. That is one of the important aspects of playing sports no matter the level. As coaches, we preach practice just like you would play the game. That maximum effort must be applied always. It is human nature to have habits, but those bad traits can be broken by simply changing behavior. Our team had a grand opportunity with a summer workout and had a chance to participate in the Fall Ball league. However, we did not have a great turnout. This was a perfect opportunity for players to have a chance to bond and learn how to play together.

We added 8 players to our roster this season that varies in talent and basketball IQ. Therefore, we had 3 hours to teach players our offensive concepts and our defensive principles before our first game. This was a daunting task in deciding to teach the basics of the game or ensure the players are getting into shape. I had to balance both, but often frustrated when I did not quite have the time to reach objectives. We had six players that were unavailable for this game and that threw a wrench into the game plan.

I laid out three key objectives in winning this game. We must be patient on offense. That requires us to have three ball reversals before we take a deep shot. This gives us the opportunity to get into the flow of the game. We must prevent second-chance points by boxing out on the weak side, strong side, and middle. We must listen to my adjustments throughout the game. That will give us the advantage in catching a team by surprise.

We started out strong in the game with our defensive pressure but players started to get tried. The opposing coach realizes this and had his team push the tempo to beat us in transition. This in-game adjustment was successful for them to get back in the game. I encourage my players to eliminate the second chance points, provide more effort on the defensive end without fouling, and to be patient on offense at halftime. We got back into the game in the fourth quarter and ran out of gas. Nevertheless, there are no warm-ups, no practice rounds, and no reset buttons. The biggest risk is not failing; it is not trying. Every day we are writing a few more words to our story. We should show our fans, parents, guest, and school faculty that we do not quit. That we will provide maximum effort in the classroom and on the court. That the image of our players will be a distant memory.

As Volleyball ends, Basketball begins, and Soccer is right around the corner! After two grueling Saturday tryout dates, the rosters for all of our basketball teams are ready to be announced. MS Boys Basketball will depend on some key 8th graders to become the leaders of the team and some talented seventh graders to be poised and ready to contribute. MS Girls Basketball has a great opportunity to maximize their size advantage and compete in the postseason this year. HS Boys Basketball has the most talent assembled at SW in 5 years but will need to learn how to be unselfish to reach their overall potential. HS Girls Basketball will defend their district title with an intense defensive strategy that propelled them to the top last year.

Multiple Teams · Victory Is Ours!

Sometimes in sports, it is not about how you start it is about how you finish! That is truly the case with our MS Lady Mavs who after a two-day tournament brought home the 3rd place trophy out of 20 in the HCAL tournament over the past weekend.

In the first round of the tournament, the Lady Mavs defeated YES Prep North Central in the final set. Lady Mavs advance to the next round on Saturday to take on the defending champions YES Prep West. The Lady Mavs got off to a big lead from the serves of Leslie Molina but was not able to withstand the surge of the Marvels and lost the match in two straight sets.

The day wasn’t over! The Lady Mavs qualified for the third-place game to face District 2 Champions YES Prep Northside. The first set was extremely tight but some key effort and hustle play from Maria Juarez catapulted the Lady Mavs to a victory in the first set. The second set was a little more challenging with several lead changes. With some help from the bench players, the Lady Mavs went up by 4 points 22-18 and finished the game as the winners and overall 3rd place champions of the year!

We Are extremely proud of the progress the girls made over the summer and to now. We feel it was a very successful year and proud of every one of our athletes! The End of Season banquet will be held on November 14th!

Multiple Teams · Senior Night Win!!!

The desire to change and improve is noticed over time. It takes a lot of work and it was what we witnessed the week of October 23-27. It was a busy week for the Lady Mavs with three important games in one week and only one practice.
On Monday, October 23, the Lady Mavs played against the undefeated, Harmony: Innovation team. After having lost two very close sets, the Lady Mavs began to take more care of the ball and won the next two sets and this time, by a lot. We were able to see our ability to go for the ball and controlling it. Unfortunately, our fifth and last set we had another very close set and lost. Although we lost that game, we saw how much we had improved and how much we had each other’s backs.
Tuesday, we played Harmony Ingenuity and it was an easy win in the first two sets, the Lady Mavs started and ended off strong.
Thursday’s practice was to get us ready for our big game on Friday. We ran for our mistakes and gave the practice 110% to make sure we were getting better. We practiced keeping the ball in play and communicating and sure enough, we were able to see that on Friday’s game.

Friday, Senior night, was against Harmony Ingenuity and again we were able to win in the first three sets and our seniors were able to show off their volleyball skills on their day. They kept the ball in play and communicated.
Although we weren’t able to win our first game, we showed much improvement from the beginning of the season. All the hard work and dedication was shown throughout these games and now it’s playoffs time!
